Haveli Sardar Rai Bahadur Soojan Singh

The final visible remnant of Khalsa governance in Rawalpindi is an ancient Haveli that was once owned by the grandparents of Sardar Rai Bahadur Soojan Singh, a notable commander in the North West Lahore Darbar Army. This Haveli was instrumental in the administration of Rawalpindi and its neighboring areas during its prime.

Currently, the Haveli is in a state of disrepair and neglect, primarily due to insufficient upkeep. Although it is privately owned, it has not been maintained, resulting in its slow deterioration. Built with Nanak Shahi and Mughlai bricks, this multi-story edifice also includes underground chambers. Over the years, it has become associated with numerous stories, both mythical and historical, that highlight its significance.

Rawalpindi itself is of considerable historical importance, having served as the second headquarters for the Sarkar-e-Khalsa and the Lahore Darbar. Eventually, it transformed into the general headquarters of the Pakistani Army. From its beginnings as a modest fort during the Akbar period to its prominence under Sikh rule and subsequent British administration, Rawalpindi continues to be a city steeped in rich historical legacy.
